In order to connect to AustNet, you need an IRC "client".
An IRC client is a software program that allows you to connect
to IRC servers. A popular and easy to use client is mIRC. You
can download mIRC here.
Once you have downloaded a suitable client, you need to install
it. Installation via Windows is done by simply opening the file
you downloaded. For Macintosh and Unix users, you will need to
uncompress your downloaded files and then install or compile them.
Once you have successfully installed your IRC client, its time
to advance to the next stage.
You now need to connect your client to an official AustNet IRC
server. Once you have opened your client, you can then customize
and select your settings through various menus. However, the easiest
way to connect is to simply type "/server au.austnet.org". It
is strongly recommended that the server you select is geographically
located as close as possible to where you are situated.
Other servers include:
pacific.nsw.au.austnet.org
netspace.vic.au.austnet.org
yoyo.vic.au.austnet.org
swiftdsl.nsw.au.austnet.org
Now that you have connected, you can join in the fun of chatting
to other macquarie uni students as well as many other people.
All IRC commands begin with a "/" character.
Anything that does not begin with a "/" character is
assumed to be a message to someone and sent to your current channel
or query window.
A channel window will pop up with a list to join a variety of
channels. Just ignore this for now (unless you wish to chat elsewhere
as well). To join the macquarie uni chat channel, just type "/j
#macuni" and join in the conversation. |
